Groups are Now Set for South Africa 2010

Today at Noon the draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup took place in Johannesburg South Africa. The rest of the world watched in anticipation waiting to see who their favorite teams would be playing, and what where the chances that their team would advance out of the Group Stage. The nations who qualified for the World Cup were organized into four different pots. Pot A featured the eight number one seeds of the tournament, which encompassed the seven nations who had the highest FIFA ranking, and the host nation South Africa. Pot B featured teams from North America, Asia, and Oceania. Pot C contained the remaining African and South American countries. And Pot D contained the remaining European nations. This organization was done to prevent two number-one seeds from playing each other. Also to prevent two or more teams of the same region playing each other. Overall it is a good system to avoid teams playing familiar opponents in the World Cup. All the entrants to the tournament are now going over there chances of who they are playing, and what do they have to do in order to get in. Remember no team has ever won nor lost the World Cup based on the draw they get, but instead on how they do on the field. It may be too early to come up with a World Cup prediction, but I will try anyways. Here is a review of all eight groups of the tournament, and my predictions of who will get in.

Group A: South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay, France

Group A is very intriguing as none of these teams are inherently above the rest. While South Africa is the host nation, and one most assume that they will perform well in front of their home fans, it is hard to wrap around the idea that South Africa is a serious contender, as they might be one of the weakest host nations in World Cup history. Mexico looked shaky in the beginning of Qualifying but seemed to get it together in the latter rounds. Uruguay is the birth place of the World Cup, and the nation one the tournament's first edition, so it is nice to see them back in the tournament after winning a playoff against Costa Rica. And speaking of Playoffs, we are left with France, who were in the center of the spotlight after qualifying thanks to a Thierry Henry handball, it is not known whether or not Henry will receive repercussions for his actions, but FIFA is considering it.

Prediction: It would be nice to see South Africa do well in their own tournament, but I do not see it happening. RSA's chances will be determined by their first match against Mexico, which I see Mexico winning. In the end I see France winning the group with seven points, and beating out Uruguay for second. Sorry, South Africa but you need to pull of some magic in order to progress. But thanks for hosting.

Group B: Argentina, Nigeria, Republic of Korea, Greece

Diego Maradona struggled in CONMBOL Qualifying, but did end up in fourth as they punched their tickets to South Africa. Now they look like they can run the table in this group. Nigeria is one of the better African nations, and being the first African World Cup, do not be surprised if one of the teams from Africa make a deep run. Nigeria just edged out Tunisia to get into the World Cup, but Nigeria has been to the Round of 16 twice, and won the Silver medal at the Beijing Games in 2008. Korea is one of the better Asian teams as they finished fourth in the World Cup when Korea/Japan hosted the tournament-the best result ever by an Asian team. Korea finished first in their qualifying group, and did so in dominating fashion. The Greeks got into the World Cup on a playoff victory, and are looking to improve over their only other World Cup Appearance in 1994 where they failed to score a goal.

Prediction: Despite struggling in Qualifying the Argentinians, led by Lionel Messi, should win this group as they run the table, however things might prove to be difficult if they lose or draw their first match against a good Nigerian team. Still, I expect Argentina to win the group with 7 points, and on the last day of the group Nigeria gets a draw against Korea, and beats them by a point.

Group C: England, United States, Algeria, Slovenia

Alright, since I am a red-blooded American I have to fight to keep my feelings aside. But this is the AMERICAN Soccer Report so my readers should get the idea on where I stand by now. Looking at this group mouths have to be watering as the English have a favorable draw. England are the clear favorites in this group after controlling their Qualifying group. For the Americans this draw is a drastic improvement over the draw they received in Germany 2006, as it looks like the Americans control their own destiny by winning two winnable matches against Algeria and Slovenia. This is the third World Cup for Algeria, however it was not easy to get to as the Algerians had to win a playoff match against Egypt in order to qualify. In their previous Cups Algeria has failed to make it out of the Group stages. Slovenia is the ultimate Wild Card of this tournament. Slovenia are in their first World Cup as an independent nation after placing second in their Qualifying group. Then Slovenia pulled off an upset of Russia in order to book a spot to South Africa.

Prediction: As a supporter of the USA I have run this group through my head hundreds of times already. Here is how I see it going down. The USA will tuck back and pull out a tough draw against England to start the tournament. Then England will plow through the rest of the group and win the group with seven points. Meanwhile the US will draw against England and Slovenia, and Slovenia will beat Algeria in their first game. Then on the last day of the group England will beat Slovenia to secure advancement, and the US will wax Algeria and beat Slovenia for advancement by a point.

Group D: Germany, Australia, Ghana, Serbia

This group will be an exciting one as each one of these nation's has had good previous runs at the World Cup. Not only is Germany the clear favorite to win this group, but the Germans are also a favorite to win the World Cup after getting Bronze in 2006. Germany was impressive in Qualification winning eight out of ten games. Australia is a strong team that made it to the Round of 16 in 2006. Ghana is another team that not many knew about in 2006, but performed well. Ghana was the surprise African team of the 2006 World Cup, upsetting the Czech Republic and then on the last day the United States in order advance out of group play. Ghana cruised in their qualification group, and are looking for a repeat of the magic in 2006. Serbia is in their first World Cup as an independent nation separate of Montenegro. Serbia qualified for the World Cup by edging out France in their Qualifying Group.

Prediction: It may not be a complete cakewalk but I believe the Germans will win the Group with seven points. Ghana will be competitive in all three games, but will not advance. And Australia will be Ghana on the last day of Group play in order to secure a spot in Round of 16

Group E: Netherlands, Denmark, Japan, Cameroon

To the casual soccer fan this group may look like a bunch of nobodies. But with a closer look you will fine this will be a really entertaining group. The Dutch are one of the most entertaining teams in the World with their score 5 goals in a game policy, and hope we will only allow 4. The Netherlands dominated their Qualifying group, and are looking like favorite in this group. Denmark won their qualifying group and this is only the nation's fourth World Cup, however in all the ones they have competed in they have progressed through the Group Stages. Japan is the World Cup after finishing second in their group behind Australia. This is Japan's fourth straight World Cup birth, but have yet to win a World Cup game outside their own country. Then comes the African representatives Cameroon. Cameroon leads all African nations in appearances at the World Cup as they are now making their fifth appearance. However only once have they advanced out of the group stages. Cameroon is not a team people should sleep on as the likes of Samuel Eto leading the Green Lions.

Prediction: I do not often predict this but I am going with two sweeps in this group. I see the Netherlands defeating Denmark then Japan. And Cameroon doing the same vise-versa. If this is true then the last day of the group will be inconsequential. So it will the Netherlands and Cameroon moving on to the knockout stages of the competition.

Group F: Italy, Paraguay, New Zealand, Slovakia

This group I believe has the greatest disparity between the best team in the group [Italy], and the worst team in the group [New Zealand]. Italy are the defending World Champions, and are playing like it after winning their Qualifying group with an undefeated record. With most of the players from the 2006 World Cup Champion roster returning for this year's addition of the team, look for the Italians to be a major threat to win the tournament yet again. Paraguay are in the tournament for the eight time, and fourth straight. Paraguay looked sharp in qualifying finishing third in South America. New Zealand won the Oceania Qualification group and beat Bahrain in the playoff. The Kiwis were down right pathetic in the Confederations Cup, and have only been to one World Cup, where they were outscored 10-2. Slovakia are a dangerous team who won their respective Qualifying group, and are looking to make a good impression in their first World Cup Appearance.

Prediction: The two strongest teams in the group play each other first, so I am predicting a draw. New Zealand will serve as an easy three points for the rest of the teams in the group. I have a hard time believing that Italy, the defending World Champions will NOT be in the Knock-out Rounds, so I have them winning the group. Then I believe Paraguay will beat Slovakia and take second in the group.

Group G: Brazil, People's Republic of Korea, Portugal, Ivory Coast

The proclaimed 'Group of Death'. This group features Three teams in the top 16 of the FIFA World Rankings. It really is a group anybody can come out of (providing they are not Korea). Brazil are the Kings of International Football since they have won a record 5 FIFA World Cups., and are the only country to compete in all of the World Cups. Brazil won the South American Qualifying group with ease. Look for Brazil to get their sixth title. North Korea are back in the tournament since their only other run in England 1966, where they advanced to the quarter-finals. North Korea qualified second in their group, behind their Southern counterpart. The Irovy Coast are the most dangerous of all the African nations, as many are picking them to advance all the way to the Semi-Finals. The Ivory Coast coasted (haha. get it) are in their second World Cup, and looking to improve on their 2006 performance. Many are expecting great things from the Ivory Coast, since just about all their players play in Europe, including the skillful Dideir Drogba.

Prediction: Brazil should run through this group with a perfect 3-0 record, meaning the real competition will be the race for second. It will come down to a weakened Portugal side, and the Ivory Coast who will be playing on their home continent. I like the Ivory Coast in the upset and the Ivory Coast and Brazil progressing through.

Group H: Spain, Switzerland, Honduras, Chile

In the last group of the tournament Spain look like the class of the group. Spain went a perfect 10-0 in Qualification, and with the exception to their folly against the United States in the Confederation's Cup, they look unbeatable. This is Spain's 13th World Cup, and they are still looking for their first World crown. The Swiss also won their group, edging Greece by a mere point. The Swiss do not receive a lot of respect in the European Football scene and struggle for everything they get. This is Switzerland's eighth World Cup appearance, and they look to improve on their performance in Germany in 2006 when they advanced to the Round of 16. Honduras qualified for the World Cup in the last seconds of the US-Costa Rica game when the Americans pulled out a draw with Costa Rica. Honduras is the third representative of CONCACAF, a region that does not get a lot of street-cred. The Ticos are looking to improve on their only other Cup appearance in 1982, where they were eliminated in Group Play. Chile is another dangerous South American team, finishing second in South America only a point behind Brazil. This is Chile's eighth World Cup, and first since France 1998 where they advanced to the second round.

Prediction: Spain will probably walk through this group like it is their job, leaving the others to battle for fourth. While I do want Honduras to represent CONCACAF well, I do not think it will happen. That leaves it up between Chile and Switzerland. In that fight I think Chile will beat Switzerland and move on to the knock-out rounds with Spain.

Well there you have it folks. My official preview of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. I will keep up with the build-up to South Africa as we progress closure and closer to the tournament. For now all 32 nations are preparing on the task at hand, getting ready to navigate through this group stage and advancing closure to World Cup glory

MLS Western Conference Report Card

Yesterday the Eastern Conference teams of the league got their final marks. Now it is time for the West-Siders to get the review. From what I can tell the Western Conference seems to get more publicity in the league than their Eastern counterparts. Mostly due to English Midfielder David Beckham who plays for LA, and that amazing fan base in Seattle. Or maybe it is because the Western Conference has won four out of the last five MLS Cups. Mostly success sells. So with out further ado the final grades for the Western Conference clubs of the MLS-NO the teacher will not be available after class.

Los Angeles Galaxy- It was once crazy year in Los Angeles for the Galaxy, as once again FC Hollywood provided the drama in the league this year. The Galaxy's year was off to a sour note before a ball was kicked as before the campaign began it was discovered that Midfielder David Beckham would not return with the club until mid season. With that in mind the young Galaxy club headed by their captain Landon Donovan went on a strange run of draws to begin there season. Eventually the Galaxy found themselves on the bottom end of the playoff race. Then the savior showed up. When Beckham was placed in the line up the clubs just started to play better and the results showed that. In the course of little less than three months the Galaxy now armed with the duo of Landon Donovan and David Beckham, and coached by Bruce Arena went on a tear up the standings and finished first in the Western Conference. The Galaxy defeated their arc-rival Chivas USA and then in dramatic fashion and beat the Dynamo in extra-time to win the conference. Then in a great final the Galaxy came up short in Penalty Kicks against Real Salt Lake, and Los Angeles' year ended in heartbreak. Despite missing his Penalty Landon Donovan still can hang his hat on leading his team to the Final, not bad for a club that was in disarray at the beginning of the year. While LA will be without Beckham for the beginning of next season look for LA to be strong next year in both the MLS, and the Champions League. I hope Mr. Beckham loves Costa Rica.

Final Report Card: MLS Regular Season: A- MLS Playoffs: A Overall: A-

Houston Dynamo: Once again it was another strong year for the Dynamo as the club had a very successful year, keeping up with the standard Dominic Kinnear has set in Houston. The Dynamo started their year in Champions League play, losing to Mexican club Atlate in the Quarter-Finals of the tournament, still Houston had the best showing of all MLS teams in the tournament. Then it was time for the regular season, the Dynamo were solid all the way throughout the year as they were always on top of the Western Conference standings, until the end of the year when the Galaxy passed them with a couple weeks left in the year. The Dynamo also had a strong showing in the US Open Cup advancing to the Semi-Finals where they lost to Seattle 2-1 in extra-time. Then the focus was back on the this year's Champions League where the Dynamo were looking to rebuild upon last year's results. The Dynamo had a great chance of advancing out of group play, but a loss to Metapan eliminated the Dynamo from the competition as they finished third in the group. After being ousted from the Champions League the focus was back on MLS Play. Houston was seeded second in the Western Conference, and defeated Seattle in the first round. Then the Dynamo fell short in the playoffs losing in extra-time 2-0 to the Galaxy. It was a busy and overall successful year for Houston, however for the first time in a while no hardware. It will be odd not seeing Houston in next years Champions League, but they also have done well in SuperLiga. Look for Kinnear's club to continue to succeed in Houston next year.

Seattle Sounders- It was a dream first season for the Seattle Sounders, both on and off the field. The tone of the season was set in the first game after a 3-0 thrashing of the New York Red Bulls. From that point on Seattle came to prove that they were for real and they were not interested in becoming a dismal expansion franchise. In addition to their successes in MLS play, the Sounders won a trophy in their first year of play as they claimed the US Open Cup. The Sounders beat old rivals Portland from USL-1 in the round of 16. Then went through the Wizards, Dynamo and finally United to win the club's first US Open Cup. With the win Seattle will be in next year's Champions League-hopefully some much needed atmosphere will be provided for that tournament. The Sounders had a strong first season and finished third in the Western Conference. In the playoffs the Sounders faithful were rocking Qwest Field as Seattle played Houston to a draw. But in Houston the Dynamo won 1-0 and moved on. Despite the loss it was a great season for the Sounders, not only on the field-which was very successful-but the real success story was the fans of Seattle who really embraced their club and the sport. Way to Go Seattle fans, it was amazing watching you guys, keep up the support for your club next year, and show the rest of the league how it is done.

Final Report Card: MLS Regular Season: B MLS Playoffs: B US Open Cup: A+ Overall: A-

Chivas USA: The early part of the season looked to be so promising for Chivas as the club went a tear in the West at the beginning of the season. Then things went downhill after a loss to Chicago in May. Chivas never fully recovered from the slip in the standings, and secured a playoff spot only in the dying moments of the regular season. During the season Chivas competed in SuperLiga. The tournament did not go well for the Goats as they finished last in their group with only one point. The US Open Cup did not go better for Chivas USA either as the club was ousted from the tournament in the round of 16 to USL-1 side Charleston Battery. In the MLS Playoffs Chivas did not fair much better. As the four seed in the West Chivas played first seed, and cross-town rival Galaxy in the Playoffs. After a 2-2 draw in Game 1, the Galaxy beat their arc-rivals in the Game 2 by a 1-0 mark. After the season ended Chivas announced that Preki will not be rejoining Chivas and even more recently Chivas has announced that former Bayern Munchen Assistant Coach Martin Vasquez will be the new many in charge of Los Angeles' "other" team. What started as such a good season, turned out to be another the disappointment with no real sustaining results for Chivas. Maybe Vasquez can turn it around for the Goats next season.

Final Report Card: MLS Regular Season: B- MLS Playoffs: B- US Open Cup: F SuperLiga: D- Overall: C-

Real Salt Lake: Real Salt Lake are proof that the regular season really does not matter. Okay, that may be a bit extreme, but it is a problem when a sub-.500 team is the league champion. But I will not dis-credit RSL for their Championship, they won it by the current rules the league has. All I am asking is the league changes the rules. Either way. Salt Lake really had an up and down season, and for the most part did not look like they would be in the playoffs. (As can be noted by most of my league review where I state that Salt Lake's Playoff hopes are slim to none. However in the Playoffs the Lakers did not disappoint. beating the defending Champions Crew twice, as well as Chicago and Los Angeles both on Penalty Kick to win the title. It is a great story as Salt Lake become the second (third counting Houston, who used to by the original San Jose Earthquakes) non- first year team to win the MLS Cup. It also is the first sports title for the state of Utah since 1971, so congrats to Utah, and congrats to Real Salt Lake. And for the loyal fans of the Lakers, you will be rewarded as Salt Lake will be in the Champions League, for next year. Congratulations. It was a great year for Jason Kreis' side, and I cannot wait to see if the Lakers of Salt Lake can do it again next year. Good Stuff RSL.

Final Report Card: MLS Regular Season: C MLS Cup: A+ Overall: B+

Colorado Rapids: Once again the Rapids experience heartbreak as for the second straight year the Rapids' arch-rival Real Salt Lake defeated them on the last day of the regular season and eliminate them from playoff contention. During the season the Rapids were hanging around third and fourth in the West, and were well into playoff contention. However failing to win in their last seven games were their ultimate undoing as the Rapids fell apart at the end of the season. For now things look like they will stay the same in Colorado as Head Coach Steve Smith is still employed in Colorado. However, one must start to guess how long with the Rapids organization wait until this once proud franchise is back in the post-season.

Final Report Card: MLS Regular Season: C

FC Dallas: For a majority of the year FC Dallas was being labeled the New York Red Bulls of the West (Not Good!). FC Dallas never really seemed to get out of the gates, and they really dug themselves a deep hole. Strangely enough Dallas only wins in the first half of the season came against the heavy hitters of the league such as Chicago and Columbus. Still, most of the Hoops' season was plagued by defeat and disappointment. With the occasional 6-goal night Dallas's season was pretty much over before it ever began. However, the club stands by the former SMU Head Coach Schellas Hyndman, who they feel has all the right stuff to turn around the franchise at Pizza Hut Park. One key for Dallas next year will be to get off to a better start, and not have to score 6-goals a game in order to have a shot at winning them. Seriously guys- Draft a Defender of two.

Final Report Card: MLS Regular Season: D+

San Jose Earthquakes: Let me be the first to say that I, unlike many ESPN writers, did NOT pick the Earthquakes to have a good year. I based this prediction on the following factors. A lack of a true scoring threat, an inconsistent midfield, terrible defense, and some questionable Goalkeeping at times. Other than that I think the Earthquakes can be a true contender. Really I have else to say to the Earthquakes, who claimed they had the tools necessary to do well this year-they obviously did not. Two good notes for the Earthquakes on this year. Number One: They still were better than the Red Bulls, a lot can be said about not finishing last. Number Two: They get a high draft pick for the MLS Draft next year. Use it will Earthquakes, you guys could use some serious help. Until then, do not call yourself a contender until you can at least win more than one measly road game.

MLS Eastern Conference Report Card

Well it's December, which means I'm going to start cramming for exams pretty soon. However before I take care of my grades at my beloved Aquinas College, I am handing out grades of my own. The Final is now complete for the MLS, and after some reflection and evaluation I am handing out my own grades. I will be focusing on all the competitions the MLS teams have competed in this year, from the US Open Cup to the MLS Playoffs. Today I will be handing out grades to the East Conference. So for the MLS East-siders here are your term mark, do not blame the teacher for your failures, it is your work after all.

Columbus Crew- It was a good season for 'America's Hardest Working Team' in the center of Ohio. After a slow start to the MLS season the defending Champions turned up the heat, and lead the Eastern Conference from June to the end of the year. With two weeks left in the season the Crew claimed their second Supporter's Shield in a row, claiming a spot in next years Champions League. Speaking of the CONCACAF Champions League the Crew were the only American club to advance to the knockout round of the competition, finishing second in their group. However this cannot cover up the Crew's breakdown in the MLS Cup Playoffs as they lost to the number-eight seed (but in their defense eventual Champions Real Salt Lake). The Crew also lacked in the US Open Cup losing by Penalty Kick to USL First Division Rochester Rhinos in the Third Round of the Tournament. Overall it was a successful year for the Crew, that was stained by two poor performances in the Playoffs. Watch out next year as the Crew will be back for revenge.

Chicago Fire: It was an up and down year for the Chicago Fire, and boy was their lots of drama. The Fire went undefeated in their first five. But eventual slipped past the Crew and were unable to catch them at the end of the year. Much was expected from this club, and the fans were hopeful for good things in the playoffs. After defeating the Revolution in the first round of the Playoffs the Fire looked to be clear favorite to beat RSL in a packed Bridgestone Stadium. However it was not meant to be as the Fire lost in a heart-breaking shootout to the Lakers and just like that their season was over. Losing by Penalty Kicks seemed to be a recurring theme for the Fire, as after placing second in their SuperLiga group and beating the Revs in the Semi-Finals. The Fire lost to Mexican Club U.A.N.L by Penalty Kicks in the Final of the tournament. The US Open Cup is historically a very successful venture for the Fire, as Chicago has won the tournament four times. However the Fire suffered an embarrassing exit from the competition after losing to USL-2 club Wilmington Hammerheads (the Hammerheads? really?) by a 1-0 result. In essence the Fire season can be described by this, they played well, but overall underachieved throughout the season, and could not get over the final hurdle. The Fire still had a good year, and once again qualified for SuperLiga. It will be an interesting season in Chicago as a lot of pieces to the Fire roster are not set in stone for the following year, especially after the departure of Head Coach Dennis Hamlett. Look for some interesting developments from Chicago in the off-season.

New England Revolution: First off, congratulation to Head Coach Steve Nicol for keeping this team together. The Revolution were injury plagued since the word Go. It was a tough regular season for the Revolution as the club remained well out playoff contention for the majority of the season. But thanks to a strong finish in the regular season, and other teams tripping at the finish line the Revolution made the playoffs. However New England looked out of gas as after winning the first leg against the Fire, Chicago beat them in them in series and that was that. Like other Eastern Conference Teams the Revs went out in the Third Round of the US Open Cup losing to the Harrisburg City Islanders in extra-time. New England did do well in SuperLiga finishing second in their group. However the Revs lost in the Semi-Finals to the Fire, and were unable to defend their title in the competition. It was net met to be in Foxburo this year, as too many injuries plagued the club all year. It will be exciting to see what this club can do under Steve Nicol once Taylor Twellman is healthy and the Revolution will have a full roster, maybe the Krafts could actually start investing money into this club? That's the idea of the century.

DC United: Another disappointing year in the nation's capital. United had a middle of the road regular season, and never really were a contender for a top spot in the standings. United kept posting average .500 results and were always in playoff limbo. Then after a streak of bad games United were out of the MLS Playoffs for the second year in a row (a club first). After winning last year's US Open Cup, United was in this year's Champions League. United won their preliminary round series against Luis Angel Firpo. DC made an improvement over last year's run in the Champions League as they were in good contention to advance into the knock-out stages. However on the last day of group play United drew 1-1 with Mexican club Toluca, and were out of the tournament in the group stage for the second year in a row. Really the only place were United saw any success was in the US Open Cup, where they lost at home to Seattle. Tom Sohen was fired as the head man of United as the club looks to go in a different direction. Due to the poor results for the first time in a long time United did not qualify for any international competitions. Look for big changes in DC, as not making the playoffs is simply just not good enough for a club that values, tradition, honor, and history.

Toronto FC: Coming into the year many thought that this would be the year that Toronto would finally reach the MLS Cup Playoffs. With FANTASTIC support for the Reds at BMO Field, Toronto was hanging around third in the East for most the year. However after some late season mishaps, including and embarrassing loss to the New York Red Bulls Toronto once again will have to wait another year for the franchise's first playoff appearance. In other ventures Toronto won their first ever Canadian Club Championship (first ever mention of the domestic tournament North of the Border in the blog). It took a 6-1 thrashing of Montreal to win the Canadian Championship, but with the domestic crown Toronto FC was in the Champions League for the first time. However their Champions League stay was short as the Reds lost in the Preliminary Round to the Puerto Rico Islanders 1-0 on aggregate. All in all it was a disappointing year for the Reds as once again the club was unable to satisfy their loyal fans with a trip to the playoffs. Maybe a new manager will help as Cummins was fired earlier this year, and former Chivas boss Preki is now in charge of Toronto FC. This is just me, but maybe some grass would help as well, instead of that artificial turf. I hope for better things from this club, for the sake of their great fans.

Final Report Card: MLS Regular Season: C- Canadian Championship: A Champions League: F Overall:C-

Kansas City Wizards: The Wizards could never get a foothold on the MLS season this year, as they struggled from the start of the year all the way through. Once in a while the men of KC would sneak into the top eight of the league, but that quickly ended. The Wizards never really mounted a serious threat for a playoff spot, which is a shame after they made it last year, and were looking for two in a row. Thanks to last year's results the Wizards qualified for this year's SuperLiga, however Kansas City did not fair too well as they only gained one point from three matches. Unlike all the other Eastern Conference teams in the US Open Cup the Wizards actually advanced to the Quarter-Finals as they beat USL-1 side Minnesota Thunder in Penalty Kicks. However the Wizards lost in the Quarters to the eventually champions Seattle. All in all it was a down year for the Wizards who just can not seem to shrug off their second-tier status in the MLS. Maybe not playing in a minor league baseball park would help.

Final Report Card: MLS Regular Season:D+ SuperLiga:D- US Open Cup:B Overall:C-

New York Red Bulls: Oh Boy; where do I start. Well what can I say, the Red Bulls Sucked this year, major suck-suck. As my dad keeps telling me 'less said is best said' So I'll keep this short. New York went 5-19-6, good enough for 21 points. Actually looking back I'm surprised they won five games this year. Still the 21 points is the worst season in league history, and just down right pathetic. New York only managed two draws on the road, and still had a losing home record. In the Champions League the Red Bull's woes continued. New York lost in the Preliminaries and that was that. Really all aspects of this team was terrible, and there are very few positives to draw up. But I did manage to find some. #1-Juan Carlos Osorio is now gone, and good riddance.#2- They are out of that grave yard that was Giants Stadium, as the club will move into Red Bull Park, the fans, and players will appreciate soccer on real grass, and a playing in a legitimate soccer environment. And I will close on this final note on positives from the Red Bull's 2009 campaign (other than it is now over). In MLS there is no relegation-otherwise this club would so be in USL or NASL right now. Actually it is funny when you think about the fact that talk of relegation came up in MLS circles during this dismal year.. coincidence??

Final Report Card: MLS Regular Season:F- Champions League: F ...let's face it F is not the proper way to describe the Red Bulls' year. Just plain ole' PATHETIC should cover it. As New York was a disgrace to the MLS this year.

Ireland's bid to become the 33rd Nation of the World Cup is Not the Proper Route

In what is the latest chapter of the Ireland vs. France handball controversy, the Football Association of Ireland officially requested to be accepted as the 33rd team in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The Irish feel that they have been cheated out of a spot in the World Cup, and therefore deserve to be alongside France when the draw for the tournament takes place this Friday. While President of FIFA Sepp Blatter has already stated the Irish have 'No Chance" of becoming the first ever extra-team in a World Cup. This is just one of the many antics that have come from Thierry Henry's blatant handball which helped send the French to the World Cup, and left many unanswered questions for the Irish supporters.

As soon as the final whistle blew in Paris the tirade of the Irish had already begun, as players and coaches were calling out Swedish officiating crew for missing what appeared to be such an obvious call to everybody in the stadium with the exclusion of the three men who were carrying the whistles. TV, Internet, Radio, Yours Truly, Everybody on planet Earth went nuts of this call that sunk the World Cup dreams for the nation of Ireland. The very next day the call for a replay was being cried as the Irish-indeed the rest of the World-wanted the match to be replayed in order to find out who was the true winner of the series, and who should be in the World Cup. Organization Presidents, and even political leaders in both nations agreed a replay should be played in order to determine who should advance to the World Cup. The idea of the replay seemed to be the most logical solution after Thierry Henry himself, the villain of this whole mess believed that a replay would be the fairest solution. Many even cited the last World Cup when FIFA instituted a replay due to a mis-interpretation of a rule. However eventually FIFA and UEFA laid down the law and said that a replay would not happen.

From that point on the news story became quiet as the idea of a replay, no matter how popular, would just not happen. Then today, just a couple of days before the draw for the tournament the Football Association of Ireland, after many appeals for a replay or some type of review by FIFA, have decided to be included as the 33rd team in the World Cup.

Ireland made an official request to become the 33rd team of the one of the biggest tournament in the World, and the centerpiece of the Football (Soccer) World. ......I'll let that sink in for a moment or two..................

ARE YOU KIDDING ME IRELAND-THE 33RD TEAM! Is that really your best option. What in the World makes Ireland think that all powerful FIFA (who I believe is third in power behind the likes of the UN and NATO) would allow a team to become the 33rd nation to be represented in South Africa for next year's World Cup. It is not just like 'Hey Ireland thought they got cheated, we should let them play too'. NO, if FIFA allows Ireland to become the 33rd team in the World Cup, then they open up a door for any other nation you felt they got the short end of the straw during qualification. You cannot just add a team into the competition right before the draw (even though as Ireland already know, it is okay to change the rules before the draw of a competition *see UEFA Playoff Round Draw). Even if, and I mean a mega-IF, FIFA allows Ireland to become the 33rd team in the World Cup (which they will not) how will they do it. Have Ireland play France, or another team in a one-game playoff in South Africa to determine who will be in the last spot of the last group. Or, will it be where their will be seven groups of four, and one group of five. If they do decide to add Ireland into the World Cup, I suggest they use the one group of five approach.

HOWEVER, FIFA should not add Ireland into the World Cup. Do not get me wrong I sympathies for the Irish cause, and I feel they got cheated. I also feel there should be a reply, if the rest of the World (even France) want a replay then why can there not be reply. As long as their is a general concurrence then the rules should have the ability to be changed. I support the idea of extra referees to help the officials out, I support the idea of a reply to determine who should be the true winner of the playoff series. But I cannot support the idea of letting Ireland into the World Cup as the 33rd team. 33 is not even an even number-it just does not make logistical sense for them. I understand Ireland's pain and disappointment. And any other action I would support them on. However applying to become the 33rd team of the World Cup is not the way to go. If I were the head of Irish Football I would still be asking for a replay, I would demand repartition for the lost revenue, I would ask for letters of apologies. However asking to become the 33rd team of the tournament is not the way to go. It is not that I do not support Ireland (they truly were robbed of the World Cup, and deserve FIFA's apologies), it is just this is not the direction the Football Association of Ireland should be taking. Ireland you have the right intentions, but are not carrying out the correct actions.

Chelsea Maintain Their Hold on the Premeirship

*Writer's Note-Hey, Readers I had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day Break (and an extra-day). So it will be two posting to make up for it. Also I figure since the MLS is done I will review the English Premier League, and see if that become popular. Also note I am going to dip my feet in actually making headlines for my Monday Postings. Enjoy.

Fourteen round of the Premiership is now complete, and now the clubs are getting a good look at what positions they will be fighting for for the rest of the year. While we have not reached the halfway marker of the season, teams are starting to get a grip of what kind of year this season will bring. One of the beauty of the English Premiere league is that despite there is no playoffs, just about every game is meaningful. Just about all the clubs in the EPL are in a race of some kind, whether it be the Championship, Champions League, Europa League, or the doom and gloom that is relegation. Every match is a fight as for the most part no win is guaranteed, beginning just about every week in the Premiership their is a curve ball. Here is a review of last week's action.

Blackburn Rovers 0-0 Stoke City

Despite being out shot 13-9, and being out played as Stoke never really saw much of the ball the Potters of Stoke City pulled out a draw on the road. Thomas Sorensan made three saves for Stoke, however it was Blackburn goalkeeper and English International Paul Robinson who had to do more work for his shutout as Robinson had to make four saves to keep Stoke off the score sheet. With the draw on the road Stoke remain in 9th place are only three points out from Liverpool for an Europa League spot. Blackburn now sit in 13th after their second home draw of the year, and are three points behind the Potters.

Fulham 1-1 Bolton Wanderers

Fulham had control of this match from the beginning, however it was Bolton's Ivan Klasnic who found the back of the net first as he scored in the 35th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Fulham kept the pressure on Bolton and looked for the equalizer as the home side out shot the Wanderers 18-4. Still the host could only muster a 75th minute Damien Duff goal and come away with a draw. Bolton's Jussi Jasskelainen made four saves to keep the Wanders in the match. With the draw Fulham is now in 10th place, four behind Liverpool for their second Europa League in a row. While the draw is significant for Bolton it does not get them out of trouble. Bolton is in the relegation zone in 18th place with 12 points, two points behind West Ham for 17th. Part of the Wanders struggles is the fact they have taken points in only three of seven road games.

Manchester City 1-1 Hull City

In one of the true upsets of the week the Hull City Tigers pulled off a 1-1 draw against the all expensive and powerful Manchester City. Jimmy Bullard's 82nd minute PK was the equalizer as Hull drew with City in a match that saw Manchester City out shoot Hull 19-9, and out-possess the Tigers. City's Shaun Wright-Phillips (another of the City's unbelievably expensive signings of the off-season) scored right before halftime to give the host the 1-0 lead in the locker rooms. Hull's Matt Duke made four saves to keep Phil Brown's club in the match. With the draw at home at home Manchester City are now in 7th place with 22 points, three behind Arsenal for the last Champions League spot, however City does have a game in hand over the two clubs that are in between them and the Gunners. The rare draw on the road is crucial for Hull City, as the Tigers have only mustered up two draws in their seven road matches this season. Hull is still in the fight to avoid relegation as they now sit in 15th place with 16 points, four clear of relegation.

Portsmouth 1-4 Manchester United

The Red Devils are back in the hunt as they tear apart Portsmouth on the road in this one. Wayne Rooney scored on a PK in the 25th minute to put Manchester United up 1-0 to start the match. However Portsmouth answered in the 32nd with a PK converted by Kevin Boateng. Then it was the Red Devils shows as Manchester scored three unanswered to make it a 4-1 win. Rooney struck again three minutes past the half to make it 2-1. Then he completed the hat-trick in the 54th with another Penalty Kick. To cap the night off Manchester United old guard Ryan Giggs struck in the 87th, and the near perfect night in Portsmouth was complete for the Red and white. Portsmouth did out shoot United 24-14, but Manchester had more of the ball and Manchester's Tomasz Kuszczak is proving to be a solid back up to Van Der Sar as he made seven saves in the win. With the result Manchester United now are in 2nd with 31 points, five back of Chelsea. Also the Red Devils are still undefeated in their road matches. The year still is a struggle for Portsmouth as they are 1-6 on at home, and are in last place with a meager 7 points.

West Ham United 5-3 Burnley

It was a real goal-fest at Upton Park as the Hammers won 5-3. Jack Collins, Junior Stanislas and Carlton Cole scored in the first half to set the tone for West Ham. Guillmero Franco and Luis Jimenez struck in the second half to make it a staggering 5-0 West Ham in the 64th minute. Then Steven Fletcher scored in the 68th and 74th minute to make it look decent for Burnley. And Chris Eagle's stoppage time goal ended the 8-goal spree, but it was not enough as West Ham cruised in this one comfortably winning 5-3. Burnley did control possession but West Ham created the more dangerous and effective opportunities. With the win West Ham is out of the relegation zone as they are in 17th with 14 points, two clear of relegation. Burnley are still in 12th with 17 points, but are still winless on the road, and have only mustered a point as the away team.

Wigan Athletic 1-0 Sunderland

Hugo Rodallega 76th minute strike was the difference in this one as Wigan rolled to a 1-0 home victory. Wigan had control of the match from the get go, out shooting Sunderland 17-9, with none of Sunderland's shots being on frame. Wigan move up to 14th as they now have 17 points, whereas Sunderland takes a dent in there bid for European competition with the loss. Sunderland is now in 8th place with 20 points-three behind Liverpool for Europa League, and five behind Arsenal for the Champions League, while the loss hurts Sunderland are still in the race for Europe.

Aston Villa 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur

Spurs controlled most of the match as they out shot Villa 25-13, and had two-thirds of the possession in the match. However it was Aston Villa who struck first in the 10th minute thanks to Gabriel Agbonlahor. The host look like they would take all three points but Tottenham's Michael Dawson equalized in the 77th to give the Spurs a point on the road. Villa's Brad Friedel made six saves for Villa, whereas Villa's only shot on target was their goal, and Tottenham's Gomes did not have much to do for the rest of the match. With the draw Tottenham now sits in third place, still in the Champions League with 26 points, but they are ten behind Chelsea. Aston Villa are only three behind Tottenham with 23 points, and are trailing Liverpool for Europa League on goal differential.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-1 Birmingham

Thanks to the quick strike by Birmingham's Lee Bowyer in the 3rd minute Birmingham come away from Wolverhampton with a 1-0 road victory. Birmingham out shot Wolverhampton 13-11, and Birmingham's Joe Hart made four saves for the newly promoted side to secure the victory. This is Birmingham's second road win of the year, and they are now in 11th place with 18 points. The season is not getting any better for Wolverhampton as with the home loss the Wanders have now lost four of their seven home matches. The Wolves now sit in 19th place with 10 points, and they need to gain four points on West Ham in order to avoid relegation.

Everton 0-2 Liverpool

The road to recover continues for Rafael Benitez's club in Liverpool. The Reds beat their hated rivals Everton 2-0 on the road. Joseph Yobo's 12th minute PK put Liverpool up 1-0 early. Then Dirk Kuyt scored in the 80th minute to finish off the Saints of Everton. Pepe Renia made six saves for the Reds to get the shutout, as Everton out shot Liverpool 16-11. Still Liverpool controlled possession and were in control of this one. With the win Liverpool remains in the Europa League spot in 5th with 23 points, two behind Arsenal for the Champion League. The loss sends Everton down to 16th with 15 points, and are only three points above relegation as the Saints are a pathetic .500 at home this year.

Arsenal 0-3 Chelsea

In the marquee match of the week Arsenal and Chelsea met at the Emirates in the battle for London. The Blues proved once again to be the tops of the Premiership as they rolled over the Gunners 3-0. Didier Drogba scored in the 41st minute and Thomas Vermaelen scored an own goal before half to make it 2-0 at the brake. Drogba added another in the 86th and that was that. With the win Chelsea maintain their five point lead on Manchester United, as they have an impressive 12-2 record. The young Arsenal squad continue to fight as they are still in a Champions League position as the Gunners have a hold on 4th with 25 points, and are still two points ahead of Liverpool and have a game in hand against the Blues and the three clubs that are ahead of them.

It is still early in the EPL and the standings are still tight. Chelsea have a good hold on the league as of now but that might change in a couple of weeks. But for now with the five point lead and good record against their rivals for the title, one must think of the possibilities of the Premiership trophy heading to North London, and the mighty Blues of Chelsea.

Monday League Review (Tuesday Edition)

And we are back- where did I leave off- Oh yeah, extra time. The LA Galaxy were gassed heading into extra-time as it looked as if they were more than content deciding the Cup in a shootout. With that attitude once again Real Salt Lake dominated the match, several times looking as if they would find the game winner in the two 15-minute sessions. Time and against Salt Lake kept the pressure on the Galaxy's Josh Saunders. However despite all of that pressure it was the Galaxy who created more shots. Robbie Finley did get an opportunity in the 94th minute when he fired a shot from inside the box, however Saunders was there to keep it at 1-1. The Galaxy, even though they were soundly beaten through the midfield (so much for the Beckham-Galaxy duo), did put more chances on net as Beckham put a shot from the wing on target in the 116th, then Donovan put a shot on goal in the 118th from about the same spot. In addition to being shot from the same position they also had the same outcome-Nick Rimando made a comfortable save on both of them. With neither team being able to find the back of the net, the match had to be solved in the drama, the chaos, the luck, and the complete frivolity of finding a winner in a minimal aspect of the game. I am of course talking about one of the most exciting events in sports. A Penalty Shootout, with this to decide MLS Cup 2009. Here is how it all happened.

Shootout

Round 1: Penalty Kicks to decide who wins the league championship is the ultimate climax of the year, and who else to start off this climax than the league all-star, and glamor player, the one the only David Beckham. Beckham stepped up and calmly put his penalty down the middle past a diving Nick Rimando to put the Galaxy on the board first. Next up was Real Salt Lake's Clint Mathis. Mathis took no time at all as he just set the ball down and put the ball in the middle of net to level the score at 1-1 after the first round of shooters.

Round 2: The Galaxy's Gregg Berhalter was up next, the European veteran Berhalter put his shot in the upper right corner with his left foot giving Salt Lake Goalkeeper Nick Rimando no shot at saving it. With Berhalter's goal the Galaxy were back in the lead. However Real Salt Lake answered again, this time in the form of Salt Lake hero Robbie Findley. Findley put his shot in the upper right corner, leaving all for Josh Saunders to do was stare at it. With Findley's goal Salt Lake tied the shootout at 2 a piece, as both clubs were perfect through two rounds.

Round 3: Jovan Kirovski was up next for the Galaxy, Kirovski put his shot in the lower left corner, however RSL's Nick Rimando once again showed his PK stopping process Rimando denied Kirovski, and gave Salt Lake a window of opportunity to take the lead. Kyle Beckerman was up next for Real Salt Lake as he had a chance to take advantage of the Galaxy slip-up. Beckerman fired a rocket into the lower left corner, however Saunders was up to the task as he got just enough of the shot to deflect it away from the goal and keep the score level at 2-2. With both goalkeepers making clutch saves, the shootout was still tied at 2-2 after three shooters.

Round 4: Then came the moment I was waiting for in the shootout, Landon Donovan, the American King of Penalty Kick, for sure Donovan was going to bury this kick, and put the pressure back on the Royals. However Donovan stepped up, made his typical sprint up to the ball, and did something not typical for Donovan. HE MISSED--I mean he flat out missed, the shot soured over the crossbar and into the radiant Seattle crowd. Donovan's miss could be classified as a choke, or just a simple miss, he is a mere mortal you know. With the Galaxy captain's miss Real Salt Lake's Ned Grabavoy had a chance to give Salt Lake their first lead of the shootout. Grabovoy's shot just made it inside the right post, and just past the reach of Josh Sounder to give the upstart, #8 Seed Real Salt Lake the lead in the shootout of the MLS Cup. For the first time in the match, you could see defeat on the faces of the Galaxy players, as they were all in a line watching what was unfolding before them. After four rounds of shooters Salt Lake had an improbable 3-2 lead.

Round 5: With the Galaxy needing a goal to continue the shootout LA turned to Mike Magee to keep the Galaxy's title hopes alive. With all the pressure in the world on the Galaxy striker, Magee was calm as he buried his Penalty into the upper right corner of the net. With the goal the crowd erupted, whether there was a pro-LA feel to the crowd or perhaps they just wanted to see more shootout soccer is debatable. But with Magge's goal Los Angeles still had a chance to win the Cup. However RSL could still win the match then and there if Salt Lake's Andrew Williams found the back of the net. With a chance to give the club's first ever MLS Cup title Williams fired a shot into the right corner of the net. However once again substitute Goalkeeper Josh Saunders guessed right and blocked Williams' shot. With the save the shootout was tied at 3 a piece, meaning it was time for sudden-death shootout to determine a winner.

Round 6: The first shooter in the sudden death rounds of Penalty Kicks was Chris Klein of the Galaxy. Klein, a long time veteran with the Galaxy, looked poised to get his second title in his career with the Galaxy. With his right foot Klein put his kick into the left side netting and the Galaxy were on top 4-3. With Klein's goal, it was up Real Salt Lake's Andrew Williams to find the back of the net, and continue Salt Lake's hopes of winning the league title. Williams' shot just missed the fingertips of Galaxy Goalkeeper Josh Saunders, and went into the net. With the goal the score was level at 4-4, and the two sides had to go into another round of sudden death penalty kicks to determine who would win the 2009 MLS Cup.

Round 7: Edson Buddle was to start the second round of sudden death penalty kicks. Buddle throughout the year has put in several goals that have helped the Galaxy throughout the course of the year. However on this night he was to be the goat for the Galaxy has Buddle's kick went right into the gut of the the MLS Cup MVP Nick Rimando. With Rimando's save Real Salt Lake had a chance to gut the Galaxy away and win the franchise's first ever MLS Cup. Robbie Russel stepped up for the Lakers, and he put his shot into the lower left corner of the goal frame. Saunders, who played exceptional during the match and should be looked at by plenty of clubs next year, however on this particular shot Saunders did not stand a chance. The Galaxy Goalkeeper just stood his ground and watched the ball rattle the back corner of the net. The ball was struck so hard that it stayed intertwined into the net for the rest of the night. With Russel's goal Real Salt Lake won their first ever MLS Cup. Salt Lake players stormed Russel and winning Goalkeeper Rimando. It was pandemonium for the Lakers, and just pure exhaustion and disappointment for the onlooking Galaxy, who came so close to achieving this dream lineup's destiny of winning North American Soccer Premier Trophy. After Russel's goal it was celebration time for Real Salt Lake, and their coach Jason Kries, who became the youngest coach in league history to win the MLS Cup

With the win Real Salt are the Champions of Major League Soccer for 2009. First thing is first: Real Salt Lake IS NOT the best team in the MLS. Not All-Time, not even this season. Real Salt Lake squeaked into the playoffs with a losing record, and finished in eight place. As the number eight seed they were transfered to the other conference since the Western Conference bracket was full. From that position it was safe to assume that the Lakers were not going to go far. However in last Sunday's match against the Galaxy, they were the better team. In their first round series with the Crew, they were the better team. As a loyal Fire fan (sorry for the small bias), I will argue that RSL played even with Chicago, however in the extra-time session and in Penalty Kicks (which the Fire were inches away from winning) but nonetheless Real Salt Lake was the better team. It should not be forgotten that Salt Lake needed to win three of their last four to get into the post-season, but once they were in, they rocked. Does this make them the best team in the league-NO-not even close. However should we condemn them for using the post-season format to their advantage. HECK NO. Salt Lake did everything the league asks for in a Champion, get into the top eight after the end of the regular season. Then win the playoffs, Salt Lake accomplished those feats, and at times looked like world beaters. So bring on all the RSL/Playoff format Hate. Like it or not, Real Salt Lake are the 2009 MLS Cup Champion. Congratulations to Jason Kries on your first title as a Head Coach. And Congratulations to Real Salt Lake, winning the State of Utah their first title the state's history. It has been a great season, can't wait till Seattle Sounders vs. Philadelphia Union come late March see you then.

Monday League Review

Good Teams, Great Crowds, one Memorable Finish. For the sixth time in league history the MLS Cup history it took more than 90 minute to decide the league champion. Real Salt Lake beat the Los Angeles Galaxy 5-4 on Penalty Kicks to claim the club's first MLS Cup in their five year history. It was the second time in league history that the Final was decided on Penalty Kick, with the only other time being the 2006 Final between Houston and New England. The season is now over and Real Salt Lake are the Champions of MLS. The most unlikely of teams as the Lakers finished with a losing record, and were the first team to win the MLS Cup with a sub .500 record in the regular season. In addition to Salt Lake's pathetic regular season record, the Lakers also become the league's second team to win the MLS Cup as the #8 seed in the playoffs, with the only other side to do such a feat was the Galaxy in 2005. Speaking of the Galaxy it is a true heart breaking loss. After losing their halftime lead Los Angeles were never in the game. The Lakers controlled possession, and in the end proved their merit in Penalty Kicks. For Donovan and Beckham and Co. it is a true heart-breaker, however only a fool would say they do not have a shot to be back next year. As for the Real Salt Lake, as their Spanish Name suggest they are indeed Royalty, as RSL are now the Kings of MLS after winning a breath taking final, in an incredible atmospheric. For MLS's agenda, it was a dream Final. (With the exception of Beckham losing, and that atrocious artificial turf). Still, the crowd, the stars, the Cinderella, and the shootout, will be enough to make MLS Cup 2009, a memorable one. Here is a review of how the action went down in the final game of the MLS calender.

The Seattle crowd was pumped up as the league rewards them for a fantastic attendance record, the Sounders averaged well over 32,000 a game (and to think they were going to limit the seating to 24,000). However, as great an atmosphere the loyal fans in Seattle created, the pitch in Qwest Field made the opening 35 minute of the Final hard to watch. Neither club seemed to get a hold of the match, whether it was early match jitters from playing in a Cup Final, to the fact that two clubs who are used to playing on grass in their stadiums were now playing on Field Turf. Neither Los Angeles or Salt Lake seemed to get a hold of the match and string some passes together. Note for the MLS; Never put the final on synthetic turf again, if Seattle has the final again, roll in some real grass, if you want get the kids from Michigan State University to do that, they are good at that you know. Another point to the early match was the fact that Salt Lake had to use one of their subs as Javier Morelas who has been key for the Lakers had to come out in the 22nd minute because of an injury. From that point on in the second half the Galaxy seemed to be gaining more confidence moving forward. Los Angeles threaten the RSL goal, and finally scored the first goal of the match as Mike Magee scored off a cross from Landon Donovan in the 41st minute. The play started with Beckham and Donovan working a give and go in the midfield. Then Beckham gave the ball back to Donovan on the wing, and Donovan crossed it to Magee Magee buried the shot and LA went up 1-0 at the half.

Second Half

The late Galaxy goal made it look like the Galaxy would have the momentum for the second half and ride out their 1-0 lead to victory. However, that was not meant to be as from the start of the half RSL came out in control of the flow of the game. The Galaxy's Eddson Buddle could not get free, and the Beckham-Donovan combo all but disappeared as the Salt Lake defense clogged the middle of the field. Then it was RSL and not LA who was creating the chances. The Lakers came close as in the 57th minute Salt Lake's Robbie Finley collied with Galaxy Goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts. Moments latter in the 64th minute Salt Lake's Robbie Finley came back from his collision and scored off a loose ball caused by a Salt Lake cross in the box, and some poor defending and clearing by the Galaxy. Finley's goal leveled the match 1-1, and from that point on Salt Lake was in control, constantly looking for that winning goal. After the goal Ricketts had to come out of the game after aggravating his injury he sustained from his collision from Finley. That is when Galaxy manager Bruce Arena used one of his subs on replacing Ricketts with backup keeper Josh Saunders (first back-up keeper used in MLS Cup history). Saunders performed well as he helped fight off the RSL onslaught that he faced, and he met the task and passed the test with flying colors. At the end of 0 minutes the score was still tied at 90 minutes which meant it would go into extra-time. In the extra-time session the Galaxy looked tired, and playing for PKs. Meanwhile Salt Lake was still creating opportunities, and chances to win the game. Even though the Lakers dominated the match over the course of 120 minutes LA still out shot Salt Lake 10-8. But MLS Cup Final MVP Nick Rimmando made 4 saves in the 120 minutes to claim his MVP prize. With the teams still even at the end of 120 minutes it was time for the dread the misery, the glory that was PK. However I am going to do this for only once, I promise, and leave my commentary about the PKs for tomorrow. IT'S LATE FOLKS, also I want to break down every kick of the ball.

So remember where we were, going into PKs to determine who would be the Champions of the MLS, and the who would be considered the best of American Club Soccer. Penalty Kicks are nerve racking, tense, and just pure luck. What a way to end a final. Stars, Controversy, Turmoil, Chaos: Just a Typical Season in LA

In the words of Galaxy star Midfielder David Beckham "A little controversy is good for the club". With all that has happened in Los Angeles this year, that statement rings with the sound of truth. The Galaxy had to overcome inter-club turmoil concerning David Beckham. The turmoil reached an all-time high when Galaxy Captain Landon Donovan called out English Midfielder David Beckham, saying that Beckham was not committed to the club, or making the sport prominent in America. Donovan's comments came at a time when the Galaxy were not performing on the field, and were well out of the MLS playoff picture. Later people questioned whether or not Beckham would rejoin the Galaxy, or would he stay with AC Milan. Then, following a meeting with Donovan, Beckham, and Galaxy Manager Bruce Arena, the Galaxy stared winning. Los Angeles went on a tear, and moved up the Western Conference standings, improving their position in the table from sixth in July to Champions of the Western Conference at the end of the season. The Galaxy's season has been full of disappointing results, under-achieving players, and off the field controversy and second guessing. Still, at the end of the season the Galaxy found themselves on top of the Western Conference, and in the MLS Cup Final. Admits all the controversy the Galaxy got the job done at the end of the season---what else do you expect from FC Hollywood. Here is a review of the Galaxy's season, and how they reached the MLS Cup Final that will be played on Sunday.

Los Angeles started the year off with the Pan-Pacific Championship. After winning their first match, the Galaxy fell 4-2 in PK's to Korean club Suwan Samsung Bulldogs. With the pre-season over it was time for the Galaxy to focus on the MLS season. The Galaxy started the campaign out with a 2-2 draw with DC United at home. Draws seemed to be the theme of the early part of the season, as time and again the Galaxy found themselves only taking away a point in games they thought they should of won. The club looked desperate as the Galaxy were win less with a 0-1-3 record through April. It was in the midst of this drawing streak that the Galaxy were knocked out of the US Open Cup by Colorado on Penalty Kicks

Then it looked as if things were about to turn around as the Galaxy defeat the New York Red Bulls 1-0 at home to start the month of May. However, following the win the Galaxy went back to their drawing ways by only taking one point in an unprecedented five straight matches to end the month of May. June saw some more decisive results as the Galaxy kicked off the month by beating Toronto 2-1. However the Galaxy went .500 in the month as they only managed to beat Houston in their next three matches.

It was at this point that the Galaxy started to click as Los Angeles won three straight to climb back into the playoff picture. Loose ends in the midfield were also sewn up for the Galaxy as July saw the return of English star David Beckham. Questions of whether or not Beckham would have a smooth transition from AC Milan to the Galaxy were answered when Beckham recorded an assist when he gave the ball to Donovan who buried his shot in the upper-corner of the net. With Beckham's incorporation back into the club, the Galaxy became a winning machine.

Following a 2-1 loss to Barcelona at the Rose Bowl the Galaxy posted a 3-2 record, and Los Angeles seemed to be assured of a playoff spot. However a dent in the Galaxy armor appeared as with the use of pure speed FC Dallas embarrassed the Galaxy 6-3 at home. However the Galaxy finished stronger than the rest of their competition as Los Angeles went 3-1-2 in the final two month of the regular season, and won two out of their last three. The Galaxy's strong finish to the season was enough for the stars of Southern California to claim first in the West, heading into the playoffs.

The Galaxy were to go up against their cross-town rivals Chivas USA in the first round of the playoffs. Following a 2-2 draw in a first leg that saw plenty of fouls and pathetic defence. Landon Donovan scored off a PK in the 72nd minute and the Galaxy advanced to the Western Conference Final. In the conference final the Galaxy overcame two power-outages and a ridiculous start time to begin with the beat the Houston Dynamo in overtime 2-0. With the win the Galaxy advanced to their first Cup Final since 2005 when the Galaxy won the title.

This year all the Galaxy's hype, star power, and most importantly, all the money spent on the roster, stadium, and the organization in general is all finally coming into fruition. It seems that this year is the Galaxy's year. The players are gelling together. Their offence is dynamic. And what is the most impressive, is that Donovan Rickets and the Galaxy defense have been impressive reducing a league high 62 goals from last year, down to an impressive 31 goals allowed throughout the 2009 season. Everything seems to be lining up for the Galaxy this year, the question will be is will this run for Hollywood's team, have a Hollywood-like ending.

Real Salt Lake Looks to Continue Their Cinderalla Run

Last Year the New York Red Bulls were the Cinderella of the MLS Cup Playoffs as they came into the post-season as the number eight seed and advanced all the way to the MLS Cup Final. In route to advancing the MLS Cup Final the Red Bulls defeated Real Salt Lake 1-0 in the Western Conference Final. Now this year it is the Red Bulls Western Conference Final victims, Real Salt Lake, that is the Cinderella of the MLS Cup Playoff. This year it is Real Salt Lake that is the club that is looking to take the league championship, after being the last team to qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs. For the Lakers it has been an up and down season, as Real Salt Lake tries to sort out the identity crisis they face as they try to label themselves as one of the league's elite, instead of a bottom feeder club that has squeaked into the playoffs and got lucky in the post season. Salt Lake has had to navigate a difficult season, and the task it not yet over as they will try to do one better than their Cinderella predecessor, and actually win the MLS Cup. The Lakers are the true up and down team, and a Grade-A example of how in the MLS it does not matter how you start the season, but instead what matters is how you finish the season.

It was not the best of starts for Real Salt Lake this year as they lost to expansion side Seattle 2-0 to start the year. However did win the next three of their four games and ended the month of April with a 3-3 record. Then May came around and that is when problems began to arise in Utah. After being eliminated by the Sounders in the US Open Cup RSL failed to win a game in May, and only managed to collect two points from in six games. One of those games was Salt Lake's match against the Los Angeles Galaxy where the two clubs drew at 2-2. The Lakers had a 1-0 heading into stoppage time, however the Galaxy scored off a PK to equalize. After Salt Lake capitalized on their own PK, Galaxy Forward Mike Magee scored very late into stoppage time and the match ended with a 2-2. For Salt Lake the result was disappointing as the Lakers held a 1-0 going into stoppage time, but allowed two goals past the 90-minute mark, and settled with a 2-2 draw at home.

June brought better results for Real Salt Lake as the Lakers posted a 2-0-2 record in June. One of those wins was on the road against the Galaxy, as Yura Movsisyan and Nat Borchers scored on opposite sides of the half to give Real Salt Lake a 2-0 win at Los Angeles. With the win the Lakers won the season series against the Galaxy. July brought more mediocre results as Salt Lake only managed a 1-1-1 record before the All-Star Break. However as a bright spot the Salt Lake did beat Mexican Powerhouse Club America in a friendly by a 1-0 scoreline.

Once the All-Star Break was over it was time for Real Salt Lake to make their playoff run. Like the first half of the season the Lakers kicked off the second half of the season with a loss. This time it was at home to the hands of the Chicago Fire. Real Salt Lake did turn things around, including avenging two previous defeats to the hands of the Sounders by beating them 1-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium. The Lakers went 3-2-1 in August, and need a good finish to the season to be in the playoffs.

Salt Lake did not look like a club in the middle of a playoff race in September as Real only managed one point in three matches, being outscored 7-3 in those three matches. However October is make or break times in the MLS, and Real Salt Lake could still put together a good October and get into the playoffs. Following a 1-1 draw in a friendly with Mexican side Chivas de Guadalajara. Then it was time for the men of Utah to make a last second playoff push, Salt Lake helped their own cause by beating the lowly Red Bulls 2-0. However a loss to rival playoff contender Toronto made the Lakers sweat it the last week of the season. Thanks to a series of fortunate results Salt Lake was still in position to make the post-season. For the second year in a row Salt Lake arc-rival Colorado Rapids on the last week of the season, while at the same time vaulting themselves into the playoffs.

Once in the playoffs the Salt Lake upset Supporters Shield Champions Columbus Crew 4-2 on Aggregate. Then in the Eastern Conference Finals (like the Red Bulls, RSL had to transfer conferences in the post-season) Real Salt Lake beat the Chicago 5-4 in a shootout in Chicago to reach the franchises ever MLS Cup Final (or ANY Cup Final for that matter). It has been an up and down season for Real Salt Lake this year, but now they are one match away from the Promise Land, a MLS Cup Title. The Lakers have overcome early season struggles, win less streaks, and being on the verge of elimination from playoff contention. These challenges have prepared RSL for the challenged they will face come Sunday in the Cup Final. However if Real Salt Lake can do one better than their Cinderella predecessor, they will move from one of the league's mediocre clubs, to one of the league's elite, and more importantly...the league's Champions.

Final World Cup Slots are Filled in Europe and America

Nations around the world were holding their collective breaths as World Cup Qualifying concluded yesterday. Wednesday's fixtures saw the second legs of the four European playoff fixtures, and the final match of the North vs. South America showdown to determine the eighth World Cup Qualifier that will hail from the Western Hemisphere. All five playoff fixtures were tight as every shot, save, and goal had an effect on the final roster of nations that will be represented in South Africa 2010. The action was intense, the calls were controversial, the moment was just pure brilliance. The final field of 32 nations is now set, now the focus is on next summer's spectacle that will be watched by millions around the world, as South Africa will become the unofficial center of the World. But before we get to far ahead of ourselves, here is the breakdown of how the five qualifiers took place throughout Europe and the Americas.

Ukraine 0-1 Greece (Greece Wins on Aggregate 1-0)

Following a scoreless draw in Athens, Greece and Ukraine competed in a winner take all game to determine who would qualify for the World Cup. Dimitrios Salpiqidis scored for the Greeks 31st minute to give the Greeks a 1-0 win on the road. After allowing the goal the Ukrainians did control the game, but were unable to generate anything offensively. The goal was enough for the victory, as Greece claimed the match and the series by a 1-0 scoreline. With the win the Greeks have qualified for their second ever World Cup, with their only other one being United State '94.

Bosnia 0-1 Portugal (Portugal Wins on Aggregate 2-0)

Portugal followed up their 1-0 win at home with a 1-0 win on the road at Bosnia. Bosnia was in contention for most of the match, and at times looked like they would equalize the series. Then Portugal's Raul Meireles scored in the 55th minute to give the Portuguese a 2-0 aggregate lead, and an all important away goal. From that point on Portugal coasted to a 1-0 win and a 2-0 win in the two-game series. With the win Portugal qualified for their third consecutive World Cup, and their fifth World Cup all-time.

Slovenia 1-0 Russia

(Slovenia tied Russia on Aggregate 2-2, but advances on Away Goals 1-0)

Despite winning 2-1 in Moscow on Saturday, the Russians knew they were not safe heading into Slovenia on Wednesday. Slovenia scored a monumental away goal which in the end served as the difference maker in the series. That away goal came into the forefront as Slovenia's Zlatko Dedic scored in the 44th minute to give Slovenia a 1-0 lead in the match, and evened the Aggregate score at 2-2. The Slovenian crowd erupted as they realized with Dedic's goal the Slovenians now led Russia 1-0 on Away goals, and could advance on the tie-breaker. The Russians desperately tried to negate the Away Goal rule by putting in a mark of their own. However it was not meant to be as the Slovenians held on for the 1-0 victory, and won the series on the Away Goal tie-breaker rule 1-0. Slovenia became independent in 1991, and this is the nation's fourth attempt at Qualifying for the World Cup. This will be Slovenia's second World Cup appearance, with there only other one being Korea/Japan 2002.

France 1-1 Ireland (France Wins on Aggregate 2-1)

OK, this will be a test of the nerves as my deep Irish roots try to compose the right words to describe the ATROCITY that took place in Paris on Wednesday. The French came into Wednesday's match with a 1-0 lead over the Irish, despite being a heavy underdog the Irish came in confident that they could create some magic. And boy did they create some magic. Irishman Robbie Keane scored in the 33rd minute to give the Irish some life as with Keane's goal the aggregate score was now level at 1-1, and both teams were even on Away Goals. Even though the French did out shoot the Irish 16-5, the Irish had the better of useful possession, and created a multitude of chances to put Ireland ahead in the series. For the entire second half the Irish dominate play so much that the Irish defense had nothing to do but simply watch the game or join the attack. Still, with the multitude of chances the Irish could not find a way to put one in the back of the net. The final whistle blew and the series had to be decided in extra time as the two nations were tied on aggregate and away goals.

In the extra-time session the Irish still had a majority of the chances but they could never put them away. Then the moment of the match occurred. Off a French free kick French Forward Thierry Henry handled the ball (this not a bias folks, he ADMITTED that he handled the ball). Henry brought down the ball and twice TWICE directed the ball with his hand in order to get the ball into position to cross it to French teammate William Gallas. From their Gallas converted from inside the 6-yard box, and it was his 104th minute goal that was the difference in the match. Irish players went ballistic at Swedish referree Martin Hansson, and the side-line official who missed the call. Everybody on the field knew it was a handball except the three men on the field who were carrying the whistles. Admits protest, and a lack of celebration by the French the goal stood. It turned out that Gallas' goal would be the difference as France went on to win the series 2-1. France will now be entering their thirteenth World Cup, and this one will be France's fourth consecutive tournament.

BUT HOLD ON A MINUTE-As of the writing of this article the Irish Football Association is appealing to UEFA and FIFA for a reply of the match, due to the clearly visible handball. It is doubtful there will actually be a reply but it is most definitely something to keep an eye on.

Uruguay 1-1 Costa Rica (Uruguay Advances on Aggregate 2-1)

Uruguay looked to cruise in this one after claiming a 1-0 win on the road at Costa Rica. However that was not the case as Costa Rica gave them more than what Uruguay could ever ask for. Uruguay's Sebastian Abreu scored in the 69th minute to give Uruguay a 2-0 Aggregate lead, however Costa Rica would not go away that easy. Costa Rica's Walter Centeno scored in the 73rd to give the CONCACAF nation some life. Following Centeno's goal the Costa Ricans kept up the pressure not letting Uruguay walk away with the game. Time and again the Uruguay crowd grew anxious over the opportunities Costa Rica was creating. However it was not enough as Uruguay and Costa Rica played to a 1-1 draw, and Uruguay won the two-game series with a 2-1 Aggregate scoreline. With the win Uruguay will advance to their eleventh World Cup, their first since Korea/Japan 2002. The nation was in relief as the home of the World Cup, and the tournament's first two Champions are once again back to where they belong, in the FIFA World Cup

With the playoff round now officially over it is time to focus on the 32 teams that will be on display at World Football's Biggest Competition. For as much pressure, excitement, passion, and drama that was in the World Cup Qualifiers. It will be nothing to likes of what the levels of pressure, excitement, passion, and drama will be in the World Cup. The Cup is only months away, and the field is now set. As the road to South Africa is complete for 32 Nations, and now it is time to focus on the big dance of International Football. The field is set, and ready. Are You?

World Cup Qualifying Playoffs are in Full Swing

The first legs of the four UEFA World Cup Qualifying Playoffs fixtures were played last Saturday. These fixtures were played by the eight best second place finishers from the nine UEFA Qualifying groups. The eight teams would compete in home and away series with the winner of the two game series qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Controversy about the playoffs was created when UEFA announced that the draw for the playoffs would be seeded. Guaranteeing that the four teams with a higher FIFA ranking would play the four teams with a lower FIFA ranking. This announcement created controversy, but none the less was carried out. No matter how their opponents were decided, the eight teams still alive in European Qualification and now had to focus on the task at hand; Qualifying for the World Cup. Here is a review of how the four first leg matches of the qualifying fixtures were carried out on Saturday, and a review of every countries situation heading into Wednesday's matches, and their hopes of reaching South Africa in 2010-- Also note, since this is the AMERICAN Soccer Report, I will also do an overview of the playoff between the two playoff representatives of the two American Continents from CONCACAF (North and Central America, and the Caribbean). And CONMEBOL (South America).

Russia 2-1 Slovenia

The Russians did the job at home getting a 2-1 win over upstart Slovenia. Diniyar Bilyaletdinov scored in the 40th and 55th minute to give the home side a 2-0 lead. Slovenia's Nejc Pecnik scored in the 88th minute for Slovenia to cut the Russian lead to 2-1, and giving Slovenia an away goal. Trailing only by a goal, and having an away goal is enough to give Slovenia some hope heading into their home fixture. Wednesday's match up in Slovenia will be interesting as we will see if Russia will shell-up in order to secure their third World Cup Birth as the Republic of Russia, or will the underdog Slovenia pull off the home win and receive the nation's second ever birth to the World Cup.

Greece 0-0 Ukraine

The battle between Eastern Europe's two rising Football sides ended up in a scoreless draw through the first leg. Both sides should feel disappointed in this one. The Greeks blew an opportunity to take advantage of playing at home, and building up a lead to head into Ukraine. As for the Ukrainians, they did come out of Greece with a draw -which is great-but a lack of an away goal means that if Greece scores in Ukraine, it would be detrimental for the Ukrainians. Much of Wednesday's match will be determined by who strikes first, and who can take advantage of the other sides mistakes. Ukraine wants to make it two appearances in a row after getting the nation's first World Cup birth in 2006. Whereas Greece is also looking for their second ever World Cup birth, and first since they made it to the United States in 1994.

Ireland 0-1 France

France really helped their cause by pulling off a win at Ireland, making the return leg in Paris all the more easier. Nicolas Anelka scored in the 72nd minute for the French, who out shot the Irish 13-11. French Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris made 5 saves for the shut out, persevering France's 1-0 lead heading into Wednesday's match. The French must feel confident leading the series 1-0 heading into France, especially after defeating their opponent in their backyard. As for the Irish the situation looks dim, now needing a goal to even the series back up. However it is not all bad for the Irish, if the men of Erie can get a quick goal in France than the series will be all tied up and the Irish would have the momentum throughout the match. Much tension will be in Paris as the French look to qualify for their twelfth World Cup, in comparison to the Irish who are in search for the nation's fourth World Cup.

Portugal 1-0 Bosnia

Portugal did get the 1-0 result at home, but that does not mean the Portuguese will be breathing easy heading into Bosnia on Wednesday. Bruno Alves scored the winner in the 31st minute to give the Portuguese a 1-0 leading heading into tomorrow's fixture, but one goal is my no means breathing room. Still, Portugal is in a good position heading into their match at Bosnia, especially since they prevented the Bosnians from scoring on the road. The series will be determined by whether or not Portugal can get a quick goal, or will Bosnia hang around, and keep threatening to equalize the series. Much pressure will be on the Bosnians at home, trying to qualify in their first attempt as the completely independent nation and ethnic group of Bosnia. While Portugal will look to qualify for their third straight World Cup, and fifth overall. All the while overcoming injuries to several key Portuguese stars. Wednesday's match in Bosnia will be tense as the Portuguese try to legitimize their claim as one of Europe's upper tier teams.

Costa Rica 0-1 Uruguay

For this World Cup's Qualification Cycle, the fourth place team from CONCACAF (Costa Rica) would play the fifth place team from CONMEBOL (Uruguay) for a spot in the World Cup, sorta as a American Continents cross-over game, between North and South America. Uruguay got a key road victory heading into them much feared Saprissa Stadium and getting a 1-0 win on the road. Diego Alfredo Lugano scored in the 21st minute to give Uruguay the win, and the advantage heading back to Uruguay. Costa Rica was in this game however out-shooting Uruguay 6-4, however Uruguay's Nestor Fernando Muslera made three saves to persive the shutout and the win. Uruguay now have a huge advantage taking the 1-0 lead, back home. However CONCACAF's Costa Rica still is in this fixture as a win in Uruguay on Wednesday could sent the Ticos to the World Cup, and all the while scoring a huge upset win for CONCACAF over their neighbors to the south CONMEBOL. However, it is hard to doubt the originators of the World Cup, and the first winners of the tournament Uruguay at home. The two-time winners of the tournament are looking for their eleventh World Cup Birth. Meanwhile, Costa Rica is in search for the nation's fourth World Cup birth, and third in a row. If they are to do so, Costa Rica will have to pull off a tough task by beating a very good Uruguay side on the road.

Tomorrow's playoffs are sure to be full of drama and excitement, as dreams will realized or crushed. The nation's of the World will watch with anxiety and hopes, praying that their team will be in South Africa 2010. For tomorrow's victors, the countdown to South Africa, and parties will begin. For the defeat, it will be a long four years till Brazil 2014, a thought most nations that still need to qualify do not want to think about. Tomorrow's games will be filled with blood, sweat, tears, hopes, and dreams. With the question of is that enough to be in the World Cup. Tomorrow the final field of countries that will compete in the World Cup will be set. The only question that remains is which playoff team will put in the work necessary to be on that coveted list of nations. Tension and suspense will rise, as 18 months worth of qualifying will all come down to one day, to determine the hopes and dreams for a nation for the next four years.

Monday League Review

Penalty Kick, Lighting Errors, Stars in the Finals, Cinderellas stunning the home crowd-yep, sounds like the MLS to me. Last Week brought us the MLS Conference Finals featuring Houston and Los Angeles in the West, and Chicago and Salt Lake (in the East off a Wild-Card Birth) in the Eastern Conference Finals. Both Finals were tight matches needing more than 90 minutes to decide each match. In the end it came down to which teams could execute their opportunities, and which teams were more lucky. All of this is part of the great drama that is the MLS Cup Playoffs. Here is the review of the Two Conference Finals, that will serve as the set up to MLS Cup 2009.

Western Conference Final

Los Angeles Galaxy 2-0 Houston Dynamo

First off, kudos to all fans that stayed up for the end of this one; you guys are the true fans. For the people who did stay up, and waited out the power outages, they were treated to a great finale. Both teams played to an even draw at the end of the 90 minutes, however the Dynamo did create more opportunities than the Galaxy throughout the course of the game. However the Galaxy Goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts made six saves on the night, including one that hit the crossbar after he got a hand on it, to record the shutout and keep the Galaxy in the match. The Galaxy did create some chances but were still out shot by the Dynamo 14-6, and put 6 of their 14 shots on frame. In the 80th minute it almost looked for sure that Houston would pull the win out in regulation. Andrew Hainault headed the ball into the net on a corner kick, and it looked as if the Dynamo would go up 1-0. However as soon as the ball crossed the line, the referee's whistle blew, and controversy ensued. The official called Houston's Luis Angel Landin for tripping the Galaxy's Mike Maggee. The entire Houston bench was furious as the call neglected the goal, and the match was to be decided in extra-times as the two teams were still tied at the end of 90 minutes.

The Galaxy were in control in extra-time, as Los Angeles was in control of possession and shots on target. Still, the Galaxy could not find early in the extra-time session and it looked like they would go to the break still scoreless. Then off a lose ball from a David Beckham free kick, old-time Galaxy veteran Gregg Berhalter scored in the 102nd minute to give the host a 1-0 lead. After the break the Galaxy killed off the game by not giving the Dynamo a chance to put together a productive attack. Then again off a great pass from David Beckham, Landon Donovan received the ball and played it to Alan Gordon who was taken down in the box. Donovan stepped up and hit is Penalty Kick and sent the Galaxy back to their first final since 2005. Despite being out shot 14-6 by the Dynamo the Galaxy and their star-filled line up (by MLS standards) are finally back to their finals after a season of controversy, loans, name-calling, and an excessive amount of tying games in the early part of the year. By claiming the Western Conference Championship, it appears Bruce Arena's transformation of the club is complete.

Eastern Conference Final

Chicago Fire 0-0 Real Salt Lake (RSL advances on Penalty Kick 5-4)

The atmosphere was electric in Bridgestone last Saturday as the Fire hosted RSL for the Eastern Conference Final. Salt Lake out shot the Fire 10-9 in regulation, and put three more on target than Chicago. But due to some fantastic saves by Fire Goalkeeper Jon Busch, Salt Lake could not find the back of the net. The woodwork was the best friend for RSL last Saturday as on three separate occasions the Fire hit the post and were denied a goal. Like the Western Final the Eastern Conference also was to be decided after the original 90 minutes. The Fire put up three shots all on target but Salt Lake Goal Keeper Nick Rimando put made a total of seven saves on the night for the shutout. On the other side of the field the Lakers fired two shots in the extra-time session, with only one finding the frame. However, Busch was up to the task stopping the only one he faced as part of the seven saves he made on the night to persevere the shutout. After 120 minutes of scoreless soccer (OK, one game where the soccer-haters were actually right..but still wrong overall) it was time for the excitement, pressure, intensity, tension, suspense, and well let's face it, down right luck that is the Penalty Kicks.

Fire star Cuauhtemoc Blanco, who's future in Chicago is questionable, scored on his penalty to put the Fire up 1-0, but Salt Lake's Clint Mathis equalized for RSL. Then hometown hero Brian McBride put the Fire up 2-1, that lead stood after Javier Morales missed for the Lakers. The lead went to 3-1 when Wilman Conde scored and it looked like the Fire were in good shape. Robbie Finely scored to get Salt Lake within one, and then a miss by Chicago's John Thorrington gave Salt Lake a chance. Kyle Beckerman scored to even the score at 3-3. Both teams scored in the final round and the score was 4-4. Nick Rimando saved Logan Pause's effort, and RSL had a chance to get the win from Fabian Espidola. Espidola's shot was high and the Fire were still alive. But again Rimando came up big stopping Brandon Prideaux's shot, and Chicago native, and late match substitute Ned Grabavoy gave Salt Lake their first ever MLS Cup Birth by burring his PK and stunning the Chicago crowd. With the goal, Salt Lake is in the MLS Cup Final for the first time in team history, once year after being denied three times by the post in a 1-0 Conference loss to New York last. RSL's advancement is the second time in a row that the #8 seed in the playoffs advances to the Cup Final

It has been a wild season, capped by a crazy playoff. But now after 32 Rounds of Regular Season Play, and three rounds of the post-season we finally have a set final. Sunday's match-up in Seattle will feature the history of winning and the star power to back it up in the Los Angeles Galaxy. Who will be facing the Cinderellas of the playoffs and the newcomers of the league who have only been in the MLS since 2005, Real Salt Lake. With so much difference in these two clubs, and the grade-A atmosphere that has developed in Seattle, Sunday's Final is sure to be a blast.
